The gym offers a wide variety of machines you can use for a circuit training workout, but you don’t have to belong to a gym to get the benefits. A circuit can be set up in your own home.</p>
<p>Circuit training combines aerobic and anaerobic activities for a workout that builds muscle and burns fat at the same time. In one thirty minute session, you can work your entire body. Many health clubs have circuit stations where several people can participate at the same time. The key to success is that you keep moving without a break so the heart rate stays elevated to burn fat.</p>
<p>Here’s how it works. Aerobic activity is alternated with strength training. For example, you can perform one minute of stationary bike riding with one minute of bicep curls. After another minute of biking, you can switch to another body part for strength training, like leg curls. If you want more aerobics, increase to five minutes of aerobics for every one or two minutes of weights.<span id="more-1400"></span></p>
<p>Want to get in on this type of training without joining a gym? Here&#8217;s some ideas:</p>
<p>1. Get a DVD. There are exercise videos that highlight circuit training. If you are new to the concept, these can help you learn to alternate aerobics with weights in a smooth transition. From there, you can create your own workout regimen.</p>
<p>2. Push-ups. You don’t need any equipment to perform this exercise. Your own body weight is used. Push-ups strengthen the muscles of the chest and abdomen, as well as the triceps muscles.</p>
<p>3. Jumping jacks. You did them as a kid, but they get harder as you get older. Because both your arms and your legs are moving, you get your heart rate up quickly. And, you can do it anywhere: in the elevator, on vacation, during television commercials.</p>
<p>4. Crunches. To perform abdominal exercises, you only need the floor and proper form. As you gain strength, you’ll be able to crunch harder and longer. Add a twist at the top to work the oblique muscles. If you have back problems, you can get the same results by using a fitness ball.</p>
<p>5. Dumbbell. Free weights offer a greater range of motion and are not bulky like machines. After your aerobic phase, you can quickly pick up a set of dumbbells to perform rear leg lifts, triceps curls, deltoid lifts, lat rows, military presses, squats and lunges.</p>

<p>The first thing that you want to look at after you have determined how much space you have in your house is what you hope to accomplish in the way of fitness.  Are you looking for some good cardio fitness equipment?  Are you just trying to maintain good heart condition and fitness?  Are you already in pretty good shape physically?  Or are you out of shape and trying to get back into shape?  Do you need to lose weight or just firm up?  Does your upper half need more of the workout or does your lower half need more toning?  The exercise equipment that you might want to consider purchasing will be based on your answers to these questions. <span id="more-1094"></span></p>
<p> If you just want to be heart healthy and go the maintenance route then you would likely benefit by a treadmill.  If you want to lose weight a treadmill, again, is great.  However, a rowing machine might be more beneficial as it burns more calories.  If you are looking to build up your arms dumbbells are a great basis for a workout.  You might want to just lose weight and get some good motion going on.  In this case a DVD of aerobics would be excellent, as would a mini trampoline to jump around on. </p>
<p>How much money can you spend?  The least expensive exercise equipment to have is a good DVD and a set of dumbbells.  Also, a mini trampoline is quite reasonably priced.  When selecting any type of exercise equipment you will want to look at how well it is made.  Are the joints welded securely?  Does the overall construction look adequate or are there areas of empty space and weakness?  Is the brand reputable?  Usually an off brand is not as well made as a more popular brand. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s always a good idea to bring someone with you to get their opinion on what to purchase and to try out each piece of equipment you&#8217;re interested in.  If it has to be ordered before trying it out then order it.  Setting up a home gym can be fun, but make sure that you will be using the pieces of equipment that you will buy.</p>

You should also know that you have to eat good foods so that your body will have the energy it needs to exercise and maintain itself for your everyday tasks of life. To make the best of your exercise, it is important to eat before and after each workout.<br />

No matter if you are going to be doing a cardio workout or a resistance workout, you should always make it a point to eat a balanced mix of protein and carbohydrates. What makes that determining percentage of carbs and protein you consume is whether or not you are doing cardio or resistance exercise and the intensity level that you plan to work at.</p>
<p>The ideal time for you to eat your pre workout meal is an hour before you start. If you plan to work at a low intensity level, you should keep your pre workout meal down to 200 calories or so. If you plan to exercise at a high level of intensity, you will probably need your meal to be between 4,000 and 5,000 calories.</p>

<p>Those of you who are doing a cardio session will need to consume a mix of 2/3 carbs and 1/3 protein. Doing so will give you longer sustained energy from the extra carbs with enough protein to keep your muscle from breaking down while you exercise.</p>
<p>For resistance exercise, you&#8217;ll need to eat a mix of 1/3 carbs and 2/3 protein, as this will help you get plenty of energy from the carbs to perform each set you do and the extra protein will help keep muscle breakdown to a minimum while you exercise.</p>
<p>Eating after you exercise is just as important as your pre workout meal. Anytime you exercise, whether its cardio or resistance, you deplete energy in the form of glycogen. The brain and central nervous system rely on glycogen as their main source of fuel, so if you don&#8217;t replace it after you exercise, your body will begin to break down muscle tissue into amino acids, and then convert them into usable fuel for the brain and the central nervous system.</p>
<p>Keep in mind that mostly during resistance exercise, you&#8217;ll break down muscle tissue by creating micro tears. What this means, is that after a workout, your muscles will instantly go into repair mode. Protein is the key here for muscle repair, as you don&#8217;t want muscle breaking<br />
down even further to create fuel instead of lost glycogen.</p>
<p>Once you have finished a cardio session, you&#8217;ll need to consume mainly carbohydrates, preferably those with high fiber. Rice, oatmeal, whole wheat pasta, and northern fruits are excellent sources. Also, try to consume 30 &#8211; 50 grams of there types of carbs after you exercise. After your cardio workout, it is fine to eat within 5 &#8211; 10 minutes.</p>
<p>Once you&#8217;ve finished a resistance workout, you will need to consume a combination of carbs and protein. Unlike cardio workouts, resistance workouts will break down muscle tissue by creating micro tears.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll need protein as this happens to build up and repair these tears so that the muscle can increase in size and strength. The carbs will not only replace the lost muscle glycogen, but will also help the protein get into muscle cells so it can synthesize into structural protein, or the muscle itself.</p>
<p>After you complete your resistance exercise, wait for up to 30 minutes before you eat, so that you won&#8217;t take blood away from your muscles at too fast a rate. The blood in your muscles will help the repair process by removing the metabolic waste products.</p>

<p>Is there a secret to a flat belly? In a word &#8211; no. The way to achieve any fitness goal is through discipline and a healthy outlook. Exercise and eating right help too.</p>
<p>When products on the market advertise that they can promise a flat belly, or gimmicky equipment hits your television late at night, don’t believe it. There is no substitute for doing the work that is needed to reach your goals.<br />
1. You are what you eat. Losing weight or fat begins with what you put into your mouth. The body needs certain nutrients to function daily. That doesn’t include greasy fast food or high calorie drinks.<br />
Putting good stuff in will help you get the results that you want. Stick with fresh, not processed foods and create a healthy diet that incorporates protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals.<br />

2. Participate in aerobic exercise. Aerobics burns fat. This can be taking a spinning class, dancing, step aerobics, kickboxing or walking on the treadmill or elliptical trainer. When you increase your caloric output, fat within your body is burned for fuel. The reason that you can’t see those beautiful abdominal muscles is because of the fat pad that is covering them. Reduce your body fat and reduce the amount of fat in your abdominal region.</p>
<p>3. Tune your exercise regimen to fighting the belly bulge. Using targeted abdominal training helps to whip them into the best shape possible. A strong midsection improves posture and increases stability and balance. Weak abdominals can result in back pain and injury when lifting. Increasing muscle also burns fat even when you are at rest. Don’t forget to work the entire abdominal area: upper, lower and oblique.</p>
<p>4. Reduce the belly bloat. Sometimes, the reason we don’t have a flat belly has to do with what we have been eating. Consuming too much salt can result in fluid retention, especially in women who are premenstrual or menstruating. Cruciferous veggies like broccoli are good for you but can cause you to become gassy. Reduce the bloat with gas pills like Beano or by eating gassy foods in moderation.</p>
<p>5. Eating three large meals can put your body into starvation mode when it holds onto fat wondering where its next meal will come from. Eat six smaller meals to increase metabolism and fat burn. Include a little protein in each meal to fight cravings that can increase belly fat.</p>

Ideas include genetics, a heavy bone structure, a slow metabolisms and even contacting a virus.</p>
<p>But to be realistic, it is evident that if you are in a negative calorie balance you can lose weight. Put simply, if an individual eats less calories than they burn or they burn more calories than eat, they will lose weight.</p>
<p>Achieving this negative calorie burn can be accomplished using several different techniques.  The most common to eat less and exercise more.  But, before undertaking any fitness program to achieve your weight-loss goals individuals must consult with their primary care physicians to determine the level of exercise intensity and the length of time at which they should begin.  Your primary care physician will make suggestions based on your current health, fitness level and any interactions that exercise may have with the medications you might be on and any underlying medical conditions.</p>

<p>For these benefits to take effect it is important that the routine have both an intensity and duration.  The intensity of the fitness routine will equal how fast your heart rate goes and for how long.  Are you sweating?  Does routine make your muscles burn?</p>

<p>The goal in any fitness program designed for weight loss is to do a moderate amount of exercise while maintaining that intensity level for 45 minutes to an hour and a half.  The amount of time (duration) which is chosen for the exercise program will relate to an individual&#8217;s lifestyle, overall health, amount of weight required for loss and the motivation of the individual.  The individual should also be working add an intensity level where they are producing sweat for at least half the work out and slightly out of breath when completed.</p>
<p>Individuals who are moderately to severely overweight should use only low-impact aerobic activities to decrease the potential for damage to the joints.  These types of activities include swimming, running in the pool, rolling and walking.  They are great exercises that continue to increase the heart rate while not damaging the joints.</p>
<p>Weight-loss and fitness programs can improve the quality of an individual&#8217;s life. Researchers also report that individuals who incorporate a fitness program into their lifestyle enjoy a lower risk of heart attack, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, common inflammatory disease and cancer.  It is a gentler way of making changes to your lifestyle that increases your success rate for your weight-loss program.</p>

You can keep your body healthy through exercise. Combined with diet, excercise is one way to age gracefully. As we age, we lose muscle strength. It is a condition known as sarcopenia. Loss of muscle mass as well as strength can be a fatal combination in the aging population. Strength contributes to one&#8217;s balance and flexibility. Without it, a fall can result in a broken hip or arm instead of a possible sprain from catching yourself.</p>
<p>There are no quick fixes to getting into shape. But, you can begin an exercise program at any age and reap the rewards. For seniors, implementing an exercise program may help to reverse the effects of time on your joints, muscles and bones. For women especially, osteoporosis is a threat as you age. So, what types of exercises can you perform? Don’t worry – you won’t be doing any PT training any time soon. You can strive for that but not right away. <p>* Start slowly. This point can’t be stressed enough. There is nothing to be gained by hitting the ground hard. You are more likely to keep with regular exercise when you find it enjoyable and painless. The best thing about exercise is that it is cumulative. Ten minutes here and there add up in the end.</p>

Increasing flexibility may combat stiffness in the joints and increase your range of motion for easier movement.</p>
<p>* Don’t forget about strength training. Strength training means challenging the muscles with weights. It can even be your own body weight. Barbells are not the only weight instrument you can use. There are dumbbells, weighted bars, weighted balls, bands and exercise machines to name a few. It is important to hit all muscle groups for overall improvement in strength. Working the back and abdominals (the core) helps with balance and posture.</p>
<p>* The best exercises are sometimes the simplest. You don’t have to be a member of the gym to perform any of the above suggestions. Exercise DVDs are available. You can pop one in whenever it is convenient for you. Walking is a great overall exercise that can be performed in your neighborhood, at a park or even the local mall.</p>

<p>A gym membership should not be taken carelessly.  After all, once you sign on the dotted line, you have made a two or three year commitment.  The payment is made each month whether you darken the gym door or not.  Who wants to give away free money?</p>
<p>There are a variety of gyms, probably right in your city.  They range from small family-oriented centers to large megaplexes with all the equipment and amenities you could ever ask for.  But, the decision of what suits your needs is up to you.<span id="more-826"></span></p>
<p>Before hitting the gym, ask yourself a few questions:</p>
<p>* When do you have time to work out?<br />
* Will your children accompany you to the gym?<br />
* What can you afford to pay?<br />
* How far will you travel from home to reach the gym?<br />
* What exercises do you like to do?</p>
<p>Don’t be afraid to visit gyms before signing up.  They love for you to come in and let them pitch their amenities to you.  Be mindful of the questions you have and ask them.</p>
<p>* Check to see what the hours of the facility are.  Smaller gyms usually keep to a nine-to-five schedule.  If you have no time to work out in the morning, you are going to be out of luck.  Larger facilities with a bigger membership have hours to fit the needs of a variety of clients.  You may be able to work out as early as six in the morning or as late as eleven o’clock or midnight.</p>
<p>* Childcare is a big issue when it comes to finding time to visit a gym and get a daily workout.  Gyms with childcare options are more attractive.  Look at the times that the play area is open.  Be sure it co-ordinates with your needs.</p>
<p>* Gyms are always running promotional membership ads, especially when they are new to town.  What would cost you fifty or sixty dollars a month may be half that during the promo period.  Get in to the gym of your choice early for better deals.</p>
<p>* Some fitness chains have multiple centers in one city.  Check to see if you can freely move between facilities or if you must stay with the center where you signed up.  Just in case, join the one that is closest to your home or job.</p>
<p>* Gyms have a variety of set-ups.  Some are mostly weights and fitness machines.  Others offer aerobics classes, a basketball court, swimming pool or areas for personal training. </p>

<p>Do you have only a limited amount of money to spend?  You can purchase a portable stepper for a reasonable price.  You can also purchase one with rails, but it will cost you quite a bit more even the least expensive.  There is quite a difference in price between the portable stair stepper and the stair stepper with rails.  If you have difficulty balancing yourself though the portable stair stepper could be unsafe for you.  <span id="more-603"></span></p>
<p>How much space do you have?  If you are living in an apartment or do not want to use a large area in your home then a portable stair stepper might be the way to go.  If your exercise room is already filled with equipment a portable stair stepper can be put away in a closet.  If you do not mind using up the space though a standard stair stepper would be better in terms of quality. </p>
<p>Quality is important.  You want a sturdy machine made out of dependable parts.  Is it electronic or manual?  Does anything move around when you step on it?  You have to be able to be comfortable and feel safe on your stair stepper.  An off brand might be fine, but a name brand is more comforting. </p>
<p>Features can vary on a stair stepper.  Most stair steppers have a console that states the number of steps taken, the amount of calories that are burned, how many minutes you are on the stair stepper, and the amount of distance that you have covered.  Some stair steppers offer a feature to measure your heart rate as well. </p>
<p>Stair steppers are great for burning calories and toning areas of your body such as your quadriceps, your calves, your buttocks, and your hamstrings.  Stair steppers are monotonous, however, but there are some that do not mind this and actually prefer the structure of it.   Whatever you do, try it out first and make sure that you are comfortable with it.</p>
